Shar Pei fever
Shar Pei fever
Familial Shar Pei Fever (FSF) is a periodic fever syndrome that is characterized by random inflammatory events with fever, sometimes with joint swelling (especially the hock -“swollen hock syndrome”), that usually last 24-36 hours. The first episode of fever most often occurs at a young age and the dog is free from symptoms between the attacks.
Dogs with FSF have a dysregulation of interleukin 6 (IL-6) that stimulates fever and inflammation by the production of so called acute phase proteins (APP:s). The chronic background inflammation puts them at risk for developing reactive systemic amyloidosis, which can lead to early death from kidney failure. Not every dog with FSF will develop amyloidosis but the fevers are a big red flag that they are at high risk for kidney disease.
The disease has a genetic origin and Shar Pei is the only breed in where it occurs. It is comparable to several human periodic fevers, such as Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) with very similar symptoms.
Ongoing research in Sweden aim to find the genetic changes underlying FSF. With such knowledge it would be possible to create guidelines in breeding and decrease the frequency of the disease in the breed.
Please contact Mia.Olsson@imbim.uu.se for more information about the research project and how you, as a Shar Pei owner, can precipitate in the research just by donating a blood sample from your dog.
